Amanah presses Pas for details on Hadi's bill
Amanah today made clear its position over the private member's bill tabled by Pas president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965.
The party said it was prepared to support efforts to strengthen Shariah laws in the country as long sponsors of the bill were prepared to subject it to debate and discussion.
Amanah communication chief Khalid Samad also said there had been very little explanation from Hadi, who tabled the bill in Parliament last May, resulting in confusion.
“This confusion has led to fear and tension within society," Khalid told a press conference today at the Amanah headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.
“Some claim the bill is about the implementation of hudud laws in Kelantan, some say it has nothing to do with hudud. Some say it violates the constitution, others say it does not,” said the Shah Alam MP.
Amanah said delaying the bill's debate by five months also did not help, adding that it was an irresponsible act which only smeared Islam's image.
“It alienates people from Islam and creates opposition due to the confusion," Khalid added.
He urged Hadi to come clean and explain the bill, instead of allowing it to be a political tool by churning out rhetoric.
He said this was crucial as any law related to the shariah courts would have a direct bearing on the image of Islam in the country.
Amanah recently came under attack after its Parit Buntar MP, Datuk Mujahid Yusuf Rawa questioned the Federal Territories mufti's support for Hadi's bill.
Mujahid had referred to Datuk Dr Zulkifli Mohamad's statement that it was compulsory for Muslim lawmakers to support the bill, saying there had been very little information about the amendments.
Following that, Pas's Ulama wing slammed Mujahid as "rude", and reminded him that as a Muslim, he should throw his support behind the bill.
