Amanah today questioned the response from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and 1MDB following the US Department of Justice’s move to seize some US$1 billion worth of embezzled assets linked to the state company which were transferred into the US.
Amanah strategy director Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said the time was now ripe for the top Umno leadership to make the move to save the party, after all avenues the various government agencies involved in the investigation into 1MDB had failed to right the wrongs.
“I have no qualm to implore the MT (Supreme Council) of Umno, their Members of Parliament and the entire Umno fraternity, to act in unison to save the party you claimed to love and more importantly, to the save the nation and the Rakyat of Malaysia.
“If you failed the nation again, rest assured that you will be assigned to the dustbin of history as the ‘Traitors of the Nation’,” said Dzulkefly.
Dzulkefly said the Umno Supreme Council must rise above partisan interests and prevent the nation from falling “into the abyss of self-destruction”.
“The nation and its leaders of both divides, must patriotically be committed to an immediate comprehensive reform and turn around the nation to become both a vibrant and functional democracy,” he added.
Yesterday, US prosecutors said over US$3.5 billion was diverted illegally from 1MDB.
The US civil lawsuits are seeking to seize $1 billion of the allegedly embezzled assets that were transferred into the United States using shell companies.
The Department of Justice has also named Riza Aziz, Najib’s stepson who heads a film production company in Hollywood, of using some RM256 million from illegally obtained 1MDB funds to finance the movie “The Wolf of Wall Street”.
