Amanah youth blasts Umno ‘thugs’

Amanah Youth has condemned the series of harassment on the Bersih 5 roadshows, saying it was an act by a groups of “thugs” linked to Umno and Barisan Nasional.

The wing’s deputy leader Faiz Fadzil described the violent behaviour of groups who had been tailing the Bersih supporters as an extension of their strong support for a party president who was faced with allegations of graft.

“Like father like son, when the Umno president is involved in corruption and its members act as hoodlumns out to defend the prime minister with similar acts of crime,” said Faiz.

“To Umno Youth leader Khairy Jamaludin, are these thugs the supporters you have produced to defend your president?” he asked.

Faiz said those behind the attacks had rejected the more civilised approach such as debate and dialogue, and instead chose thuggery.

He cited the antic of red shirts leader Datuk Jamal Yunos, who invited the press to witness him tearing a demand letter sent by Bersih chairman Maria Chin Abdullah before flushing it down the toilet.

The act prompted PKR Youth leader Dr Afif Bahardin to lash out at Jamal, calling him a “devil” who lingers in the toilet.

“Youths should not emulate such thuggish leaders because it is against Islam and Malay culture,” Faiz added.

He urged for the full arm of the law to deal with such acts.

“Arrest and try them in court. Bersih 5 must be respected because its rights are guaranteed under Article 10 of the Federal Constitution.

Bersih is canvassing public support for its November 19 rally in Kuala Lumpur to call for Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s resignation.

Last week, Jamal and his followers stopped Bersih supporters in Teluk Intan.

In Sabak Bernam today, a red shirt support assaulted a Bersih supporter. Several reports say that several policemen at the scene merely watched the incident without taking any action.
