Police says Red Shirt Bersih 5 confrontation will not be allowed

Maria tells Umno to cleanse party of thugs

Umno has been urged to rein in its thuggish members who could further destroy its image, says Bersih 2.0 chairman Maria Chin Abdullah, following threats on her life by Mohd Ali Baharom, also known as Ali Tinju.

“Why do Umno and the authorities allow thuggish behaviour as the party’s image. Ali and Datuk Jamal Yunus are Umno members,” Maria told Malaysia Dateline.

Ali Tinju is under police investigation for criminal intimidation after he was quoted as saying that Maria “may no longer walk on this earth” if she went ahead with Bersih’s November 19 rally.

Speaking to Free Malaysia Today, Ali also was recorded by the portal as warning Maria that she would find herself being made to walk with her feet up.

Maria said she was convinced that Ali was not misquoted as he claimed.

She added that she feared for her family’s safety.

“I am definitely worried. I have three children. They want to attack me at my home, at my workplace or wherever. This is a threat. Not only to me but also all the office bearers and participants of Bersih,” she said.

Bersih plans to launch an information blitz starting October 1 to publicise the rally, dubbed Bersih 5.

The focus of the rally this time, among others, are the 1MDB scandal, the redelineation exercise and other local issues.

The roadshows planned by Bersih will see distribution of leaflets, speeches and walkabouts at market place.
