Melaka CM not the only one blabbering, says Kit Siang
DAP leader Lim Kit Siang said even Umno leaders were taken aback by the claim made by Melaka chief minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron recently, that the US was trying to bring down Najib in order attack the Malays following the US Department of Justice’s application to freeze 1MDB assets.
He said this could be seen when Minister for Rural and Regional Development, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob refused to give his response to Idris’s statement.
“Sabri is not the only one who was bamboozled by Idris’ ‘conspiracy theory’, as nobody knew what Idris was blabbering about.
“Which Umno Minister or leader dare to specifically endorse Idris’ statement and talk sense instead of nonsense?” said Lim.
Idris on Sunday questioned the move by DoJ to seeks the seizure of some US$1 billion in assets linked to 1MDB, saying it was Washington’s political ploy to topple a democratically-elected prime minister.
Idris also gave the example of the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003 on grounds Iraqi president Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction, saying the same was being repeated to bring down Najib.
“We want to tell the Americans that this is Southeast Asia… this is Malaysia. Our country is our responsibility. What credibility does the DOJ have (in meddling in our affairs)?” he said at Ampang Umno division meeting.
But Lim said Idris was not alone, saying statements of Umno leaders had stunned Malaysians in the past.
He said Minister for Communications and Multimedia, Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak’s suggestion that the DOJ lawsuits were an attempt to colonise Malaysians by “mind-control”, and Minister for Agriculture and Agro-based Industries, Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek’s statement dismissing the DoJ action as “normal matter”.
“One would have thought that the best response to the DOJ lawsuits, the single biggest money-laundering forfeiture in the US and the world which stained and tarnished Malaysia’s image and reputation as a global kleptocracy is to vigorously and pro-actively debunk and rebut the grave allegations of kleptocracy against the Malaysian government, especially the litany of ‘criminal conduct’ by ‘MALAYSIAN OFFICIAL 1’ and others in Malaysia as well as the embezzlement and money-laundering of billions of dollars stolen from 1MDB meant for the country’s development,” said Kit Siang, referring to the phrase used by DoJ to refer to a powerful individual, much speculated to be Najib.
He questioned why Umno leaders were not giving a “vigorous and pro-active response” to the DOJ action.
“Is it because they are incapable of such thinking and action but can only pour out statements which cause even other Umno Ministers and leaders to wonder the rationality if not the sanity of such statements?” he asked.
On July 20, documents released by US investigators revealed that some US$3.5 billion was misappropriated from 1MDB, and named top Malaysian officials involved in the illegal siphoning of money out of the state fund.
The document named the stepson of Najib, Riza Aziz, for using more than RM250 million of 1MDB funds to finance the production of the movie “Wolf of Wall Street” starring Leonardo diCaprio.
Najib himself was not named, although the document merely cited “Malaysian Official 1”, in what some said reflected the cordial relationship between Najib and the Obama administration.
