Former deputy prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin made an appearance in Sungai Besar this morning, just hours before voters choose their new MP tomorrow.
He was accompanied by members of the Coalition of Umno Branch Chiefs Malaysia (GKCM), and mingled with shoppers at the market in Pasir Panjang.
Muhyiddin’s visit on the last day of campaigning followed several campaign speeches by former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to back the Amanah candidate, Azhar Abdul Shukor.
However, it is not certain whether Muhyiddin, who is serving his suspension as the Umno deputy president, was there to lend support for Azhar.
When asked about the matter, a spokesman said Muhyiddin was not there to support any candidate.
Sungai Besar, alongside Kuala Kangsar, will go to the polls tomorrow. Azhar is challenged by BN’s Budiman Mohd Zohdi and PAS’s Dr Abdul Rani Osman.
Before his sacking from cabinet last year, Muhyiddin had led several BN by-election campaigns.
