No support for military’s return in Turkey, says Amanah

Amanah today joined other Pakatan Harapan parties in condemning the foiled coup attempt by a faction of the Turkish military, and urged Malaysians to stand by the people of Turkey in defending democracy.

“In times of turmoil in the Middle East and difficulties attributed by terror related violence in Turkey, the people and the nation need and deserve all the support of the international community,” said Amanah’s Kuala Terengganu MP Datuk Raja Bahrin Shah, who also heads the party’s International Affairs Bureau.

Raja Bahrin said the military had no support from the Turkish population, whether from the conservative or liberal factions.

“This was reflected by the spontaneous reaction of the large crowds that came out onto the street to oppose the coup.

“Even the opposition political parties opposed the attempted coup,” he said.

Early this morning, Turkish forces quashed an attempted coup by a faction of the armed forces.

Turkish military chief of staff also said 104 coup plotters had been killed and 1,563 arrested in a night of gunfire and explosions in Ankara, Istanbul.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan rushed back to the Turkish capital amid the news, and said it would signal a major cleaning up of the army to cleanse it of those seeking the country’s return to military politics.

There have been accusations that US-based Fethullah Gulen had been behind the coup attempt, by a powerful but the Turkish cleric rejected any suggestion he had links to the events, and condemned “in the strongest terms, the attempted military coup in Turkey”.

Raja Bahrin said Turkey was an example of a progressive nation and was an inspiration to other Muslim countries.

“It has managed to build a strong and vibrant economy rivalling its European counterparts while allowing the rightful place of Islam in its society.

“Both the younger Muslim generations of Turkey and the more conservative Muslims population are comfortable with the progress made by Turkey under Edorgan,” he said.

“Amanah urge Malaysians and the world community to condemn the coup attempt and stand in solidarity with the Edorgan government and its Turkish people.”

Pakatan Harapan has also issued a joint statement condemning the coup attempt.
